Perennial herb from a stout, scaly, somewhat woody stem-base ascending to erect, 20-80 cm tall. Simple or sometimes branched above, smooth below, hairy above especially in the inflorescence.
Alternating lance-shaped leaves tapering to pointed tips. Flowers are bracted terminal spikes in bright red, scarlet to orange and very rarely yellow.
Found in meadows (wet or dry), grassy slopes, tidal marches, clearings, roadsides and open forests. Common south of 57 degrees N in BC.
