A deciduous shrub that forms dense clonal colonies that can reach up to 7m in height. Branches are erect, flexible at base, red-brown, smooth or sparsely/densely hairy.
Alternating leaves are green with grayish hint, linear to strap shaped with a shiny upper surface. Flowers are unisexual lacking sepals and petals.
Found in mesic to moist steppe and montane zones, commonly in sandy/gravelly floodplains and sedge meadows.
