Similar to the Serviceberry Willow, Mountain Willow and Park Willow, it is quite variable in appearance growing 4-6m in dense clumps.

Branches are reddish-brown or yellowish with mottled green. Leaves are lance shaped to oval with smooth, wavy or toothed edges.

The species is dioecious and is common on floodplains, riverbanks and waterways. The plant is a source of food for animals and honey bees are known to use the pollen and nectar.
