A perennial tufted herb producing clumps of stems 15-100cm tall with sheaths purplish red towards the bases. Flat bladed leaves are small, 2-6mm wide, much reduced lower on the plant.
Found in wet meadows, ditches, roadsides in lowland and montane zones common south of 55 degrees North in BC, rare in the northwestern part of the province.
