    Deciduous, erect, large shrub, 1-6 m tall; twigs thick, soft, pithy, usually somewhat glaucous; bark dark reddish-brown, shiny red or purplish black berries.

    Flowers feature small, recurved petals with white stamens and yellow anthers. Flowers are fragrant and attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

    Common in moist to mesic meadows, ditches, streambanks, grasslands, shrublands, disturbed areas and forests in the lowland, steppe and montane zones.
