    A large conifer reaching 80m in height with thick, rough, furrowed orangish to purple-brown bark. Main branches are level to upswept with lower branches drooping.

    Light green needles are 2-5cm and turn bright yellow in fall. Seed cones are 2-5cm, green to reddish purple when immature, turning brown at maturity. Old cones often remain on the tree for years.

    The trees are long-lived, often centuries with the largest known specimen in Montana over 1,000 years.
